In gefossiliseerde blaadjes zit allerlei waardevolle informatie opgeslagen.

Present use of the Dutch sandy-soil landscape is not sustainable and not climate proof. Hence there is an urgent and widely supported need for a socio-environmental transformation. We propose that in future landscape systems, functions at each location should align with local soil suitability and water availabililty. This requires a paradigm shift from the present system, where landscapes are modified through e.g. water management and fertilization to serve desired functions. With our research team and consortium of experts and actors, we will design nature-based landscapes that are climate-resilient and valuable and we will identify pathways towards these desired landscapes.

The extreme droughts of 2018-2020 in the Netherlands caused great social distress and huge economic damages. The drought-related damage in 2018 was estimated between 900 and 1,650 million Euro's. Scientific knowledge can help to mitigate such adverse effects. Here, we propose to integrate advanced drought knowledge and data, including satellite data, field observations and modeling, to study the water/carbon/nutrient use and the response of agriculture and nature systems to drought events. Together with stakeholders, we will investigate and co-create measures to increase the resilience of the agriculture and water sectors against droughts, enhance preparedness and develop climate change adaptation strategies. The climate adaptation in agriculture aims at sustainable agriculture, income security for farmers and maintaining a healthy living environment4. The WUNDER project will develop an integrated monitoring and modeling system for understanding the dynamics of drought processes and the behaviour of water-soil-plant systems during prolonged drought events. The integrated WUNDER system will enable to explore scenarios and evaluate options in managing, planning and adapting our agriculture and nature systems to extreme droughts in the Netherlands. Together with farmers, water managers and other decision makers, the WUNDER system will be applied in use cases for past drought events, tested for possible future scenarios and operationalized for daily drought monitoring and prediction. The system will provide unprecedented, detailed information on water/carbon/nutrient use, expected response (and potential damages) of agriculture and nature systems to droughts, enabling to develop pathways for climate adaptation in agriculture from field scale up to national level.
